Setting live briefs

The term ‘live briefs’ covers a range of approaches

From a media professional coming into the college to set a brief that his or her company has recently completed, through to a college production company that secures commissions.

  • A live creative brief is when students work for an external client;
  • Create opportunities for students to test and validate their production skills in a real working environment, delivering a finished product on time, within budget and to an agreed specification;
  • Encourage interpersonal skills of persuasion, negotiation and presentation;
  • Guard against exploitation, expecting work for little or no reward on commercial projects;
  • Ensure the course does not take business from local companies, perhaps even new graduate incubator companies, who might want to pitch for this work but are squeezed out by the subsidised college company.
