Film Trainee Finder – giving new entrants a fair opportunity

Our trainees go through an intensive selection process and induction – then all they need is a helping hand to learn and develop their craft through on-the-job training with a levy-paying feature film production.

In Spring 2017, we recruited 47 new film trainees, in production office, craft and technical grades, to help level the playing field for enthusiastic and talented new entrants, whatever their background.

Meet some of the trainees

claire anneClaire Anne Williams – Hair and Make-Up Trainee (London)

Claire trained at the Delamar Academy: "My long term goal is to be a recognised make-up artist within the industry. Before this, my aim is to learn as much as I can in as many different areas, such as period hairstyling, prosthetics, casualty and special effects make-up."

Anna CallanAnna Callan – Assistant Director Trainee (Belfast)

Anna studied architecture before participating in Cinemagic’s Short Film Academy, supported by Creative Skillset’s Film Skills Fund, which enthused her passion for film: "Through Trainee Finder, I’m hoping to get experience on feature films, see and learn how the AD team interacts and interrelates to other departments, to get my foot in the door and build a career."

Nicola Matiwone

Nicola Matiwone – Edit Trainee (Poole)

Nicola achieved an MA in Post-Production Editing at University of Bournemouth: "I want to be an editor. That’s my main, number one goal. Being part of Creative Skillset’s Trainee Finder with the opportunity to be placed on real feature films and getting to work with professionals – I can’t think of a better way to make this become a reality."

shaniShani Vizma – Production Office Trainee (Corby)

Shani graduated from the Creative Skillset accredited Media Production course at Liverpool John Moores University: "My aspiration is to move from being a production runner, up to production secretary, through to co-ordinator. That is my eight year plan. Beyond this, my dream is to eventually be a producer who can help other people break into the industry and provide opportunities."

Trainee Finder in action – working with you

Productions hosting trainees in the past year include Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Ready Player One, Wonder Woman, Free Fire and Lady Macbeth, to name a few. Here’s what some of them had to say:

Lady MacBeth

Peter Smyth, Associate Producer, Lady Macbeth

"Creative Skillset’s Trainee Finder was invaluable during the production of Lady Macbeth. The scheme allowed us to work with incredibly talented trainees in the costume, makeup, production design, editing and production departments allowing us access to fantastic talent and providing the trainees with experience on an ambitious feature film. I would recommend the scheme to all producers looking to access emerging filmmaking talent."

Dermot Hickey and Elliott Purvis, 1st AC and 2nd AC The Children Act

"Working on 'The Children Act' was a pleasure. A lot of that was due to the hard work and effort from our trainee, Nick Poole. He made everyone's jobs easier on set by always being able to perform any given task with a positive attitude. His technical understanding was at a good level and his ability to fit into the camera team with ease made him a valuable member of our department. I wouldn't hesitate to work with Nick again, and I believe he will make an excellent 2nd AC in the not so distant future."

Tracy O'Riordan, Producer, Dark River

"The Creative Skillset trainees we worked with on the shoot for Dark River were incredibly hard-working, dedicated and a pleasure to have as part of the team. It was a tough shoot and they all met the challenges head on and with a smile."

And, here’s how valuable the trainees found their experience

Cei FramptonReady Player One and Wonder Woman, Sound Trainee

"You learn so much by being on set working alongside industry professionals. This first-hand experience has been invaluable to my development. It felt like I was part of the crew, part of the team. One of the highlights was finding myself doing some booming while standing right next to Steven Spielberg."

Chapman KanPostcards from London and Beast, Art Trainee

"On my trainee placement I got to learn a bit of everything, I got to see how things were done by different people in different departments, at different stages of the film. I enjoyed being part of the art department – mainly I’ve been working as a dressing props trainee prepping sets before they are used, but I also had the opportunity to be on-set whilst they were shooting."
