Investing in our people
Getting into TV drama and staying there can be challenging enough particularly with the freelance nature of the industry. So it's not surprising that Creative Skillset's research identified a reluctance or financial restraint to be able to retrain or move within the sector. This is why the HETV Drama Levy is so important to provide the funds that makes training available at all levels across the drama map. At the heart of our extensive training portfolio is the Make a Move Drama Fund.
Originally known as HETV Stepping Fund, the Make a Move Drama Fund allows levy paying productions and companies to apply for up to £20k to help people change direction, move up or even across to fulfill various TV roles. Make A Move is now one of the most popular HETV levy production training offers since its launch in November 2015, with over 80 mid or senior level people getting access to on–the-job training so they can make their next career step.
We had a good experience with Creative Skillset trainees on other productions so when Maja at Creative Skillset mentioned the Make a Move initiative, it was perfect timing as we needed to bring other people on board, and Make a Move really helped us with the decision. The main departments which benefited were Production and Art with the additional funding allowing us to bring in crew earlier, get them up to speed and give them more responsibility. For the individuals who were able to step up into new roles, they were hugely supported by the funding enabling them to access new software or tools. Equally, the application process was so straightforward and we were fully supported by the in-house team throughout with a really quick response.” Victoria Goodall, Line Producer, Babs, BBC
Kwadjo Dajan, BAFTA winning producer and co-founder and Creative Director of Sugar Films, recognises the need to sustain and support those at mid-career point. "Compelling, distinctive drama requires fresh and creative talent and crew so it is essential to make sure people and companies can access funds which allow them to fulfill not only their potential but passion."
If we don’t invest in our people, whether at the beginning or midpoint of their careers, then we will see people either move out of the industry or move overseas. The Make A Move Drama Fund addresses this, allowing people to explore a new career path with financial security.” Kwadjo Dajan
Since 1 April 2016 alone, £409,045 has been requested by 25 productions resulting in 44 people getting the opportunity to step up in their roles. Individuals are assigned a mentor who oversees their training and development. The stellar roll call of productions who have engaged with Make a Move includes Black Mirror, Line of Duty, Outlander, Poldark, The Man in an Orange Shirt, The Replacement, Grantchester and Call the Midwife.
